Overview:
Sonya is a generally friendly young woman who can easily start a conversation on whatever topic comes to mind be it movies, sports, comics, etc. She is somewhat introverted, usually requiring others to approach her first before being willing to speak to them. In terms of personality, she is somewhat tomboyish and isn’t particularly concerned with feminine customs like dress and make-up. That said, she is a very passionate cook and can be particularly testy when it comes to matters of kitchen hygiene. As an aspiring restaurateur, she takes some serious pride in her craft with hopes of opening a restaurant some day, though she at times gets a bit carried away when experimenting new dishes.
As the Black Celestial Ranger, Sonya is quite agile and her small size makes it difficult for opponents to land a hit on her while she herself can land a pretty mean punch. However, her fighting style, while effective against the Zangyack’s common footsoldiers and monsters, often leaves her vulnerable when fighting the Empire’s more experienced commanders and warriors, something that she found out the hard way during the initial invasion with more than a couple scars to prove it, hence why she is working to refine her fighting style in preparation for the Empire’s next incursion. In addition, Sonya gets easily excited during a fight, and can be confident to the point of recklessness. Overall, Sonya very much enjoys being a Ranger, though at times she can appear rather naive to the risks involved with it.

History
Born in Novosibirsk, Russia in the final days of the Cold War, Sonya and her family immigrated to the United States following the collapse of the Soviet Union in search of a better life, eventually settling in Bellevue, Washington near Seattle. While in middle school, Sonya gained the attention of some bullies, which prompted her older siblings to enroll her in a self defense class to fend for herself, after which the bullies left her alone. Growing up on a healthy diet of video games, comic books and anime, Sonya dreamed of becoming a superhero, a fantasy that didn’t entirely leave her upon entering college even as she pursued her other passion, cooking. Upon graduation from Eastern Washington University, Sonya desired to one day open her own restaurant and enrolled at a community college in Bellevue to earn her business management degrees. Even with pursuing her professional goals, Sonya felt that she was missing some sort of purpose in her life, a purpose she could not quite identify.
That is, until one night, while walking home from studies, she noticed a flash of light that descended upon the vicinity of a nearby park. Curiosity taking her, Sonya walked up to where the light had fallen, revealing a small pod that left a fairly moderate crater in the ground. Against her better instincts, Sonya approached the pod and touched it, revealing some sort of handheld device, and a set of what appeared to be cards of some kind. What’s more, the pod emitted a hologram projecting the image of a man human-like in appearance. The figure, who did not divulge his name, explained that his homeworld had come under assault by a force called the Zangyack Empire and despite his people’s best efforts, they were soon conquered. What’s more, he warned that the Empire had set its sights on Earth next. In response, the man explained that his people had converted elemental energy to be utilized as cards, and sent those cards to Earth, hoping to find those worthy enough to receive their incredible power in the hopes of repelling the Zangyack’s invasion. Sonya assumed she must be dreaming, but felt compelled to bring the device, which he had called the “Celestial Morpher” and the cards with her home that night.
Some time later, the Empire made planetfall in force. Realizing now what the recording had had told her, Sonya stepped into the fray, taking on the mantle of the Black Celestial Ranger and helping to repel the Zangyack forces while cutting her teeth in battle. Knowing that the Empire was still out there and likely planning another invasion, Sonya continues to hone her fighting skills in preparation for what is to come.
