The Hunter Rangers work for a larger organization, known as the Department of Ancient Recovery. The government organization sends them in search of ancient treasures of a lost civilization known as "Precious" (although there is a longer, more official title, but it rarely is used). The Precious contain great power and cannot be allowed to fall into dangerous hands.
There is, however, another large group seeking them out. The remnants of the lost civilization, coming out of stasis that saved them from disaster many generations ago. They want their artifacts back, and they want to use them to rebuild and take the planet as their own. And then there's also the Zangyack, who would stop at nothing to gain more weapons and power for themselves.
The Hunter Rangers are a larger group, with at least two dozen Rangers currently active, and others who work for the organization as non-Rangers, but explorers/treasure hunters.
There are certain areas in the world where the Precious are more inclined to appear, and as such the DAR set up home bases for the Rangers in those vicinities, forcing a number of them to live together and force interaction and cooperation on a regular basis. These locations also are nearby transportation for the sake of going after Precious, or for eliminating creatures birthed by the Precious.
