Overview: Akane is not a pacifist. She understands that humans are violent creatures and sadly for the greater good violence can be necessary. She however doesn't think she'd capable of physically hurting another person. At least she wants to believe that. All she wants to do is heal and work on cures to prevent sickness.
Despite having experienced hardships time and time again, Akane clings to idealism. “So what if I’m betrayed? It’s better than suspecting everyone.” After all she’s seen even she can’t acknowledge that people are good at heart or even mostly good. But she’s never been jaded. She’s the sort to give people the benefit of the doubt and type to look for good even when it’s buried deep inside. That does not mean she’s preachy. Akane understands that the louder you shout, the more fervently you try and convince people of something, the less likely they are to listen. If people don’t want to know, don’t won’t to accept, don’t want to believe then they won’t and there is nothing you can do to convince them.
Akane is a very encouraging source. She won’t preach but she’s very good at picking up on subtle signs of depression or just general sadness. In such cases she’ll do all she can to cheer said individual up. People function differently so she’ll try and determine what’s best before just taking the plunge. Some people hate to talk about their problems. In such cases she’ll speak of topics they enjoy or leave them something they love like a particular food or maybe a flower. Of course if she thinks people are avoiding some issue and need to confront it she will get in their face about it and be rather pushy or nosy as some would describe it.
She’s clever but not arrogant. In fact she’s rather insecure. All the proof of her smarts is there with her degree and her successes but she always feels that their should be more she should be doing. She takes it as personal loss when a patient dies under her watch even if there was absolutely nothing she could have done to help.
Her personal life is lacking. She feels time she could spend “goofing off” would be better used treating others or at least making her patients feel better. She’s the doctor who really treats her patients like human beings and does everything she can to get them to relax and somewhat enjoy their stay as they go through the recovery process. She remembers birthdays, their favorite colors, and just things they like. She’s too empathetic for her own good, quickly forming emotional connections with those she treats. However, she realizes she’s not a machine and does need to have some time for her. During such occasions she really enjoys leisure reading and swimming.
Akane’s life isn’t balanced and she knows it. She works both as a doctor for URSA and a doctor in a normal hospital. She thinks both jobs are incredibly important and just wants to help as much as possible. But this means she isn’t necessarily coping with everything she needs to on an emotional level. She’s brave but being a field medic is dangerous and the experiences can scare her as much as she’d rather pretend otherwise. She’d die for someone else but that’s not ideal. She wants to live and help so many other people.
With her empathy and all the death she sees she’s not really coping with the grief and guilt. She bottles it away and tries not to think about it. These attempts are not always successful. She throws herself into her work and research but the negative feelings still linger. Fortunately spending time with Kiriha at least drags her away from work and can give her time to process emotions or at least have a little fun.

History
Akane was fortunate to be born near the end of the war. Her family was not greatly affected by it. Both her mother and father survived as did their relatives. Her older brother had been far too young to participate. However, she suffered in other ways. Akane’s mother died in childbirth and her father new truly forgave her for “killing” Mother. The characters for her name mean deep red and they were given to her to remind her of the blood that was spilt so that she could live.
Her older brother was kind and caring but he suffered from hemophilia. Father and Akane both knew that Emi probably wouldn’t live that long. A simple trip down the stairs could kill him. Father loved him dearly and was extremely protective of Emi. Emi tried to convince Father to be kinder to Akane but failed. But Akane was grateful that at least she had an older brother looking after her even though she was the healthier one.
When Akane was 6 she watched her brother bleed to death when they were out playing in the woods and he tripped over a branch. Her father screamed at her, insisting that she was cursed and that she brought death and destruction to everyone who got close to her. Overcome with grief she couldn’t find the words to defend herself. And truthfully she felt guilty having only watched, being able to do nothing to help. From that day forward she vowed to become a doctor so she wouldn’t be so helpless ever again.
Her father remarried when she was 7. Her stepmother hated Akane even though her father paid her little attention and what attention he showed was typically negative. Aiko did not like sharing Hiroshi at all. And Akane was another mouth to feed and look after.
Akane’s relationship with Aiko only worsened after she gave birth to Jun, her half-brother when she was 8. Jun had asthma and was prone to coughing fits. Aiko was furious that Akane was healthy while her own child was sickly. It didn’t help that Akane looked more like her father than Jun.
Jun was a sweet boy and wanted to be friendly with Akane; but, given how nasty his parents were towards her, he was pressured into ignoring her or being outright mean while in their presence. But he’d apologize later and would secretly play with Akane when she could. Being a caring soul, Akane forgave him and the two grew very close.
It was a relief when Akane graduated and was able to attend medical school. She doesn’t hate her father or step-mother. But she’ll acknowledge that being around them was incredibly difficult. And she’d prefer to keep them at a distance. Although in her heart she keeps hoping to impress them and win their acceptance. They’re constantly disappointing and hurting her.
In medical school she made fast friends with Kiriha. During the middle of her training monsters returned to the world. But she kept her mind on her lessons. She was going to be a doctor. Nothing would prevent that.
Akane graduated and became a determined and dedicated doctor who saved many patients. Known for her cleverness and her eagerness to not just treat but search for cures she was approached by the URSA and offered a job. Figuring they needed people more than anyone, she accepted. Being brave and wishing to help, she signed up to be a field medic, viewing her life as secondary. But she absolutely refused to fight, insisting that she was a doctor not a soldier. She currently works for the URSA as well as a normal hospital, wanting to treat as many patients as possible and believing she can effectively work two jobs since she isn’t a soldier.
