I can throw Shinji in, what if Mayu looked like someone from his past who he liked? He has lives since the beginning of time so he could have a couple of people he liked. Perhaps he and Mayu could meet and he will be surprised by the similarity and the two of them go on from there?
the fact that she hates monsters will sweeten it even more as it can be some sort of unrequited love kind of story. A tragic story.
