20 years ago, a number of Heavenly Saints from another universe were betrayed and banished to our universe, where they are sealed into the bodies of talking cats. These cat bodies don't, however, impede their magical abilities - far from it, they are still basically dermigods. The leader of this splinter faction is called Saberhagen, and he took control of the organization called SAINT in order to continue to oversee magic even if he and his cohorts cannot return home. But not all of them are willing to continue working under him, and they are seeking champions to help them seize control of SAINT and the intense and potent magic the mantle of the Merlin possesses, each of them with their own plans for what to do with that power.
Each of the Saints still has some of there original powers, but have lost the ability to cast more generalized magic on their own. The need for Champions arose from this need, and by passing their powers through a human (or possibly less than human) vessel he has a weapon to defeat his enemies, achieve his goals, and crush the other Saints and their Champions. The corruption of their powers comes from the loss of their natural Saint forms and the fact that they were forced into the forms of cats, who have a natural antimagic to them as a species. As a group working with Saberhagen's raw power, they can pull off generalized magic without problem.
The spell was supposed to wipe their memories as a whole but only managed to erase the part of their memories dictating what the OTHERS could do with their powers. As a result, none of them are certain what the others could do. A few have used this to their advantage.
Saberhagen's powers relate to creating constructs, though to what end is unknown. Firoak often muses about the power of the stars without explicitly that entails. Azrael has done well to hold the nature of his magic close to the chest. Brisingr's seems to enhance his physical abilities when he uses them, and somehow he can do the most diverse array of general magics. Jareth' ability seems tied to his voice and the way that he speaks. Sparkys' powers are the only one that has revealed his powers, which are based on the creation and control of storms as well as their various trappings. Integra is second to Azrael in terms of keeping his abilities secret. Amanojaku seems to automatically know the answer to anyone's question. And Terask seems to never need help in a fight, though he has never fought in front of the Council and no one ever lives long enough to explain his powers.
Of note was the fact that there WAS a tenth member called Maougel (I forgot), but he was expelled for breaking numerous Laws. This isn't to say that no one on the Council is breaking the Laws, but they didn't want to get found out so they cracked down on him. His banishment was used as an example to all of the Wizards in SAINT not to follow his example.
While you will have some say in how the sponsor for your Champion acts, they aren't technically player characters. Mechanically they function in the same way that an Imagin or a Kivat does. When you take up one of the champions, I will message the account you used with information on the Saint's goals, powers, and how I see their personality. I don't have everything mapped out and if you want you can throw everything but their powers to the wind, but do what you want with the information.

If you want to take down a slot for your character to be one of the champions, do it here. The exact nature of their specialties will be revealed (to the audience) in time.
