Since the long before the dawn of human civilization, the Heavenly Saints have battled the ghoulish denizens of Infershia. They eventually succeeded in destroying their great leader N Ma, at least temporarily. His twelve fragments were scattered throughout the human world, protected by powerful seals and the Heavenly Saints above.
20 years ago, a number of Heavenly Saints were betrayed and banished to another universe by one of their own. The betrayer was slain in the conflict, but later resurrected by N Ma's power to become the Sorcery Priest Meemy. As the Heavenly Saints were banished, they were able to send forth some of their power out into the world in the form of falling stars.
People chosen by the Saints' power are able to use magic and are known as Magi. They are tasked with defending the world from the evils of the Underground Empire and stopping N Ma's complete resurrection, as well as uncovering the whereabouts of the missing Saints. Meemy has chosen his own Magi to fight for him in the form of Wolzard, who is tasked with destroying the Saints' Magi.
But these Magi are not the first. No, throughout history the Heavenly Saints have granted great power to a select few they have deemed worthy enough to fight against the forces of darkness. The powers of these Ancient Magi still exist today, contained with certain objects. Once a person comes in contact with one of these objects, a Guardian will appear to test them. The test completely depends on each Guardian, but you once you have passed their test, you shall receive the Saints' Blessing and the power of an Ancient Magi. One such object is a lamp..
The Saints power has traveled throughout the world during the 20 years, searching for worthy hosts. It selects not only from the living, but the deceased as well, granting them new life (note: can be from any point in the past). When a Magi is finally chosen, they find themselves in a white room, empty for a single imposing door marked with the letter "M." They are given two choices: to forgot all they had seen and live a carefree normal life; or to accept the Saint's blessing and protect the world as Magi. If then choose the later, they open the door and find themselves back in the waking world, a MagiPhone in hand.
But power is not without sacrifice.. in order to gain the Saint's blessing and pass through the Door, they must first give something up. It can be anything, as long as its significant to the tested. A loved one, an ambition, a prized possession, a limb..
As Wolzard was created with Meemy's own power, he did not have to sacrifice anything except his total allegiance to him and N Ma. The Magi who pass the test the Guardian's test, on the other hand, must sign a contract with them promising something in return, completely depending on the Guardian's whim.
Using just about any door and their MagiPhone, the Magi can unlock a portal to the "House of M," a pocket dimension in the shape of an old time-y Victorian mansion who is constantly reshaping itself and is a seemingly never-ending labyrinth. It serves both as the Magi's base and their home if necessary with each Magi getting their room tailed to their specifications. In the center of the House, rests the Infernal Clock, a grandfather clock of pure obsidian that counts down till N Ma's resurrection and alerts the Magi to any Infershia attack with its ring that can be heard even outside of the House. Two of N Ma's fragments have already been located by the forces of Infershia and released.
Of note, there is also a grand garden that contains statues of every Infershia creature the Magi have defeated which updates itself accordingly. Fallen Magi and comrades are immortalized there as well, but as part of the center fountain. There has been one previous team of Magi in the past 20 years, but they were all wiped out save for one. Their Saints' Blessings left their deceased bodies, searching for new hosts to carry on the fight.
Each Magi has command over a specific element and a specialization in a specific form of magic. Pink can transform herself into pretty much any object, Blue can see glimpses of the past, present, future in the any surface of water, etc. Modern Magi can take on giant forms called Majin while the Ancient Magi utilize transforming mecha known as the Iron Gods. The Iron Gods are "children" of the Saints that ally themselves with the Magi.
Each Magi also has a familiar or "Servant" that takes on a more humanoid appearance while in the House and a more compact appearance in the human world (animal, object, child, etc). They can be called onto to fight if needed, but in order to take their House appearance outside they must siphon off their Magi's magic. The Servant's shape depends on whatever the Magi gave up to gain the Saint's Blessing. It is believed that the Servant is the key to obtaining the power of Legend.
The "Guardians" of the Ancient Magi are similar to the Modern Magi's Servants, but don't necessarily have to follow the same rules such as the weakened states or having to follow their Magi's commands.
The Servant's life force is connected to both the House's magical core and their Magi. If either goes, so do they. Guardians, on the other hand, are tied directly to their objects of power. Servants can sense dark magic, especially that of the Infershia, and can transport themselves to the location of her Magi; be it another time, dimension, or even enter their dreams. Servants are forced to obey the commands of their Magi to the letter, but not if means breaking any of the big magic laws. Continued dissonance between Magi and Servant will cause the Servant to lose control and go berserk, taking on a more twisted, monstrous form. Servants and Guardians will most likely have their own assortment of magic powers and/or weapons/tools.
The Magi are very much subject to these absolute laws, along with keeping the existence of magic a secret from the general populace (though this more like an unspoken rule, than an official one).
