During the early 15th century, war had engulfed Japan. Assassins known as Ninja were employed by warlords and the greatest among them was the Kage no Masuta. It was believed by man that the Kage no Masuta was not even human, but a demon that could become one with the very shadows.
The descendants of the Kage no Otoko became the infamous Shadow Clan, working directly under the Emperor of Japan in secret. From the Clan came man, as important to the Clan as Kage no Masuta himself, who crafted special Ninja tools, the Doron Changers, that allowed the Shadow Clan to call forth mystical powers. Five of the most promising members were chosen to become the first Kakurangers.
The great Ninja Tools were passed down from generation to generation until the 19th century when a man with skills that surpassed that of the first Great Smith was born and created a new series of Ninja Tools, the Shinobi Medals. A war erupted then erupted amongst the Clan over possession of these Medals, which would later be known as The Shadow War. The Clan was soon split into two, the splinter group christening themselves the Heaven Clan.
Further unrest continued throughout the early 20th century. A prominent kunoichi of the Shadow Clan left with several other kunoichi to form their own Flower Clan. The Heaven Clan was dissolved entirely when a second great ninja war broke out, known later as The Heavens War, splitting them into three groups: the Hurricane Clan, the Thunder Clan, and the Sky Clan, splitting the Shinobi Medals among them.
The once great Shadow Clan still resides in Japan to this day, they remain entirely isolationist, rarely accepting outsiders into their group unless to continue the family lineage. The title of Kage no Masuta is passed from generation to generation, leader to leader. They reside in a Japanese-style mansion compound that has been in the family for several generations, with a house specifically for the Head and smaller houses for the less important members. They still remain strong political ties with the Japanese government and the Royal Family, allowing them to continue to remain in power despite all they've lost.
The Flower Clan resides in Holland, in an ancient castle surrounded by a magnificent garden. They accept any and all women into their ranks, allowing no male to enter their sanctum under any circumstances. They run a high profile perfume company as a cover to send members across the globe to perform assassinations.
The Hurricane Clan resides somewhere in North America. Unlike the other Clans, the Hurricane Clan accepts any wishing to learn the art of ninjutsu regardless of race, gender, or familial relation. They reside in an apartment complex, not the fanciest digs I know. They also run a small-time public Dojo.
The Thunder Clan has not been heard of in quite sometime and have believed to have died out after repeated clashes with the other Clans. If they are still around, their practices and location are entirely unknown.
The Sky Clan formerly resided in North America, alongside the Hurricane Clan and were on good terms with them. Those of the Sky Clan were masters of disguise and could take the form of almost anyone, as if their bodies were ever forming clouds. They were wiped entirely in the late 20th century, the exact circumstances unknown. Unbeknownst to the rest of the Clans, there was a survivor.
The Ninjas of the Five Clans not always got along and are often at opposing sides, but the game may change now that the Space Empire Zangyack has employed their own group of ninjas from beyond the stars, the Universal Ninja Group Jakanja, whose leader seems to have some sort of beef with the Five Clans.
