"No...I've always been alone," Shinji said, "I had comrades, but that was just friendship...never real family to speak of." Sure he had the Lords, but it was more or less a master-servant relationship and even the Els considered him as their master and not as a family member.

Shinji looked at Iris as he softly smiled at her, he gently took her hand away from his cheek and kissed it, "It is alright Madame Trochu, it is simply my duty to be alone in my quest, as it is now my quest and duty to see to it that you have your country given back to you," he said to her.
